Four metal 40/4 industrial steel wire stackable chairs in the colour orange, designed by David Rowland in 1964. Produced by Howe.
The chair is called "40/4" because 40 chairs can be stacked up to a height of 4 feet. This chair was the first compact stacking chair ever and is widely regarded as the golden standard for stacking chairs. Because of its unprecedented stacking possibilities, but also for its seating comfort, durability, timelessness and elegance. Critics often refer to the chair for its unparalleled industrial sophistication and method of production. The chair is frequently found in the top 10 of the best designer chairs from the 20th century. The chairs are part of the permanent collection of MOMA in New York.
Condition: They have signs of wear, the most significant ones were clearly photographed. There's rust. You often see rust on these chairs when they have a certain age. Slight dent in the seat of the orange chair. There are welding spots from a repair on the back of the seat of the orange chair.
One chair is slightly bent, but that's only visible when all of the chairs are stacked. You won't notice it when you are sitting in the chair, and when all the chairs are placed next to each other, it is not visible.
The chairs no longer have the floor sliders.
The chairs are heavy, due to the use of steel wire and metal seats; they have a combined weight of no less than 27 kg.
These materials also make them virtually indestructible and suitable to be used for many years to come.
