Moretti was born to Italian parents of humble origins, his father an anarchist carpenter from Tuscany, his mother a Umbrian cleaning lady. They fled Mussolini’s fascist Italy.
Raymond Moretti is probably one of the greatest and most gifted French painter and sculptor of the 20th century. An instinctive portraitist, he illustrated many books, posters and magazine covers (La revue littéraire, Pilote, etc.). He also left monumental paintings everywhere in France, including his renowned mural (200sqm) in the Forum des Halles of Paris and in his hometown, Nice. He illustrated over 30 French postal stamps.
Moretti was friends with Picasso, Cocteau...and worked with them.
His work is instantly recognisable. Astounding energy, confidence, dexterity and vitality.
