The Compact Sofa, designed by Charles and Ray Eames originally intended for their own house in California.
Unusually high and divided into two horizontal strips, the backrest lends the sofa an interesting profile and clearly sets it apart from the weightiness of traditional sofas.
The sofa can be folded up, making it easy to transport. Moving away from the bigger, plusher, traditional design for a sofa resulted in a piece well-suited to smaller rooms yet still maintains a high level of comfort. It’s open and airy design works well for both home and office environments with many being used in the more nicely appointed lobbies throughout the world. The Compact sofa is one of Charles and Rays Eames’ most successful and enduring designs (one of many) and is considered today an icon of American Modernism. The Sofa Compact dates from 1954. With its tall, slim and slightly angular profile, it is very different from traditional sofas. Designed for both the living room and the office, the sofa is collapsible for easy storage and transportation.
