A lovely wide-margined copy of a 'family doctor'. Hirsch-H III, 190 notes that this is a 'book purely on an empirical basis in the form of a modern house and family doctor'. The extensive appendix [114 pages] is full of pharmaceutical recipes; it also has a section on 'portable remedies' for the traveller. It is designed for beginning physicians, surgeon-physicians and for those without access to either, as the title indicates. The author is also important as a founder of a school for midwives and obstetrics inBern (H. Jenzer, 'Die Gründung der Hebammenschulen in der Schweiz im 18.Jahrhundert (mit besonderer Berücksichtigung der bernischen Verhältnisse', Gesnerus 23 (1966): 67-77) [The founding of midwife training schools in Switzerland in the 18th century (with special reference to conditions in Bern)].
This book appeared in several languages, e.g. in Italian in 1789. It begins by explaining that people have different constitutions and temperaments, and that diet, the environment, exercise, work, and fitness are important in maintaining health (it has some good sections on surviving cold winters). It then covers more or less all and any illnesses likely to be experienced by readers, from smallpox to fevers, from gout to jaundice, from internal and external inflammations and pains to spasms.
It deals with flu and colds, with poisons and haemorrhages, with skin disorders, wounds and their treatment, and then illnesses affecting eyes, ears, teeth, the head, chest, heart, stomach, and the sexual and urinary organs. There are separate sections on illnesses affecting children, women, pregnant women and on venereal diseases; a section on onanism (a Swiss concern it appears, vide Tissot) and then all manner of advice on conserving health through healthy regimens.
