Frederik Ruysch and Michael Ernst Ettmüller - Adversariorum anatomico-medico- chirurgicorum decas prima[-tertia]... - 1717/1723

Adversariorum anatomico-medico-chirurgicorum decas prima[-tertia]: in quâ varia notatu digna recensentur : cum figuris aeneis, cui adjuncta est Michaelis Ernesti Etmulleri Epistola problematica ad v.c. Fred. Ruyschium de ovario novo. Quarto: complete in four parts, which includes Ettmuller’s Epistola problematica, ad ... Fredericum Ruyschium ... de ovario novo dated 1721. Each of the ‘decas’ of Ruysch has a separate title page. Ettmüller's Epistola problematica also has a separate title page. Title page vignettes, initials, tail-pieces. Pagination: [4], 34, [2], 18 pages [2] leaves of plates; [4], 46, [2] pages, [3] leaves of plates; [6], 36, [2] pages, [3] leaves of plates (1 folded). Complete. In contenmporary calf, with some wear (see photos), but holding together well. Frederik Ruysch (1638 –1731) was a Dutch botanist and anatomist remembered for his dioramas containing human parts, dried or embalmed. In his three ‘decas’ (decades) of the listed book, Ruysch offers a total of 30 clinical observations. The 'Decades’ were published across six years in response to objections raised by various doctors, including Ettmüller (1673-1732), about his observations on the anatomy of the female genitalia. The 'First Decade' of 1717 is significant in that it contains one of the earliest descriptions of cellular activity in the female reproductive system (cf. Heirs of Hippocrates). References to numerous medical anatomists, notably William Harvey. The final Decade was published in 1723. The work is complete and includes Ettmüller’s Epistola problematica, which is not present in all library copies. Ruysch’s observations are precise and very-well executed. The accuracy of the illustrations and text is such that it has proved possible to reconstruct and offer a modern diagnosis of many of the cases, as has been done by Lucas Boer and his colleagues in their 2017 paper: ‘Historical perspective and contemporary analysis of his teratological legacy’, American Journal of Medical Genetics, 173 (2017): 16- 41..
