This part contains a description of the Kingdom of Guinea (Modern day Ghana) in Africa. The principle description comes from a Voyage undertaken by the Dutch in 1600-2, and written by Pieter de Marees. The volume also contains earlier accounts from Portuguese, French and Dutch sailors.
Pieter de Marees undertook a voyage with an Amsterdam trading company from 1600-2. He travelled for trade and describes the intereactions between Western and African traders on the coast. He wrote extensive descriptions of the People, customs and wildlife of the area. The work contains passages on local life, marriage, cheiftaincy, commercial activity and trade.
The author was the first to record local languages and publish them in the West.
An opportunity to obtain one of the earliest available descriptions of West
Africa and a corner stone of any collection of early Travel writing on Africa.
