Curator's comments
Rudolph Ackermann's publication 'Microcosm of London' consists of three volumes of text illustrated with 104 hand-coloured plates. The prints were made after drawings resulting from the collaboration of the artists Thomas Rowlandson and the French émigré Augustus Pugin, the latter creating detailed architectural sketches and the former adding the appropriate figures. The first two volumes of text were written by William Henry Pyne, and the last by William Combe. The majority of prints were made by J. Bluck and Joseph Stadler. The three volumes were originally printed in sequence between 1808 and 1810.
