The Apostolic Fathers were authors who lived in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Their writings are of the utmost importance for our knowledge of the earliest period of the Christian Church. The writings of the Apostolic Fathers, such as treatises, letters, excerpts, apologies, etc., are all from the period 90-160 AD and provide insight into the reception of the biblical message and the structure of the early Christian congregations. The authors of these documents are believed to have personally known some of the Twelve Apostles.
