Pair of lovely wooden temple candlesticks 燭台 (shokudai). With traces of gilt over a dark red lacquered substrate.
Of typical traditional shape; A fluted column above a chrysanthemum-shaped 菊 (kiku) base and carrying a smaller chrysanthemum-shaped top equipped with an iron candle pricket.
In a very good original condition with minimal traces of wear conform age, like some minor lacquer loss. One column is slightly skewed. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
Dimensions:
Height 48.5 cm, Diameter 13.5 cm.
Period: Japan - 19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period).
This kind of candle stands are used in or around altars in Japanese Buddhist temples.
