Vaso - Satsuma - porcellana pasta avorio - Giappone - ca 1910-20s (Late Meiji/Early Taishō)
High-quality Sendai wooden ishô’dansu 衣装箪笥 (cabinet of drawers) in two sections. This is a high quality piece which has been extensively fully restored, cleaned and waxed in Japan.
Made from solid precious Keyaki wood (Zelkova - "Japanese oak") coated with a shiny dark red lacquer emphasizing the intriguing natural warm brown wood grain.
The upper part is configured with five drawers of different sizes. And the lower part with three drawers of different sizes and a hinged door heavily clad with decorative protective iron hardware. Opening to two more small drawers.
The large smooth-running drawers are equipped with very refined, large decorative iron lock plates shaped like a chrysanthemum flower 菊 (kiku) with in the centre a crest 紋 (mon) featuring a diamond-shaped chrysanthemum菊菱 (kiku’bitsu), surrounded by a circle decorated with a flower pattern.
Flanked by sturdy iron ‘warabite’-shaped bail handles with matching oblong escutcheons.
The cabinet is very spacious and ideal for easy storage.
Each side is equipped with a ‘pole-carrying’-handle for easy transport.
The ishô’dansu is in a very good restored condition. Including a key, which functions in the old fashioned Japanese way, not very smooth. Please see the photos for a condition reference.
