A charming pair of six-panel hinagata byôbu 雛形屏風 (doll festival folding screens) with paintings of lush blooming cherry blossom trees 桜 (sakura) with two blue birds perched on a branch.
The flowers are painted by using shell paste 胡粉 (gofun) in low relief.
Colour, ink and gofun on paper. The paintings are surrounded by paper borders, and protected by a black lacquered frame with shaped metal protective hardware.
Dimensions:
Total width for one screen 89.2 cm (2 x 15.4 cm and 4 x 14.6 cm), Total width for the complete set: 178.4 cm. Height 33.6 cm.
Period: Japan – Meiji period-Taishô period (First quarter 20th century).
Considering the age they are in a good condition. There are some to be expected sign of age and wear, like loss of gofun. One panel with a small hole. Please check the pictures as a condition reference.
The folding screens are ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art.
