Nanga artist of the late Edo period. Known as a theoretical leader of literati painting at the end of the Edo period and as a nobleman. Born into a family of doctors in Nagoya, he studied painting under 山田宮常 Yamada Kyujo (1747-1794) at first. The fellow-pupil was 山本梅逸 Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783-1856).
