About the Works
Artist: Ikkan Kawajiri 川尻一寛
Title of work: Odai Chawan (Themed Tea Bowl) 御題茶碗
This is an Odai Chawan (Themed Tea Bowl) by the renowned Japanese ceramic artist Ikkan Kawajiri. Against a lustrous black glaze background, a finely detailed golden dragon is powerfully depicted, magnificently expressing the energy, wisdom, and protective symbolism that dragons hold in East Asian culture. The beautiful gloss and delicate brushwork speak to the artist’s exceptional skill.
An Odai Chawan is a tea bowl created by distinguished ceramic artists based on the annual theme (“Odai”) announced by the Imperial Household Agency. These bowls are often used at New Year’s tea gatherings and are highly valued for their sense of season and cultural significance. They are prized not only as works of art, but also enjoy great popularity in the world of tea ceremony.
In this piece, the subtle particles visible depending on the light create a beautiful, profound texture. The artist’s signature is clearly inscribed on the foot of the bowl, attesting to its authenticity.

About the Artist
Ikkan Kawajiri was born as the third-generation successor of Sekizan Kiln, a prestigious Kyoto Kiyomizu ware family, and graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts (currently Kyoto City University of Arts). From an early age, he was familiar with ceramics, and while inheriting the traditional techniques of Kyo-yaki, he created numerous works that incorporated a contemporary sensibility.
His style is characterized by a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. While basing his work on the delicate techniques of traditional Kyo-yaki, he actively incorporated modern forms and glazes, pursuing a unique aesthetic. He also participated in exhibitions both in Japan and abroad, achieving repeated selections and awards especially at the Contemporary Craft Exhibition and the Kyoto Art Exhibition (Kyoten). Furthermore, he exhibited his works internationally, including in Berlin and New Zealand, earning recognition on the global stage.
As a member of the Ceramic Artists’ Club and the Kyoto Ceramic Artists’ Club, he also contributed to the development of the ceramic arts community.
