Impero romano. Gordiano III (238-244 d.C.). Antoninianus Antioch mint 238-244 A.D. FORTVNA REDVX, Fortuna seated left, holding rudder and cornucopiae. (Senza Prezzo di Riserva)

Roman Empire – Gordian III (A.D. 238–244) Antoninianus, debased silver References: RIC IV 210; Cohen 98 Obverse: IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG — Radiate and cuirassed bust of Gordian III right, rendered in high relief with a serene, youthful expression characteristic of the Antioch series. Reverse: FORTVNA REDVX — The goddess Fortuna seated left, steering destiny with her rudder and bestowing abundance from her cornucopia. A prayer for the emperor’s safe return and enduring prosperity. Specifications: Metal: Debased silver Diameter: 22 mm Weight: 3.87 g Condition: Extremely VF Choice Very Fine. Exceptional obverse portrait of fine style and sharp detail; reverse lightly struck but well-centred with full legends. Attractive tone and smooth silver surfaces, typical of the Antioch mint. Commentary: Struck at Antioch — the eastern mint famed for its elegant portraiture — this issue embodies the optimism of Gordian’s youthful reign. Fortuna Redux, “the bringer of safe returns,” reflects imperial hopes for stability amid the turbulence of the Soldier-Emperor period. The artistry of this die, especially in the radiate crown and finely modelled drapery, makes it one of the more appealing Antioch antoniniani of the era. Choice very fine, excellent portrait, great sample!
