Reverse: FORTVNA REDVX — The goddess Fortuna seated left, steering destiny with her rudder and bestowing abundance from her cornucopia. A prayer for the emperor’s safe return and enduring prosperity. Exceptional obverse portrait of fine style and sharp detail; reverse lightly struck but well-centred with full legends. Attractive tone and smooth silver surfaces, typical of the Antioch mint. Commentary: Struck at Antioch — the eastern mint famed for its elegant portraiture — this issue embodies the optimism of Gordian’s youthful reign. Fortuna Redux, “the bringer of safe returns,” reflects imperial hopes for stability amid the turbulence of the Soldier-Emperor period. The artistry of this die, especially in the radiate crown and finely modelled drapery, makes it one of the more appealing Antioch antoniniani of the era.
