A gem from the Prague court workshop of Rudolf II, which came into the possession of the Elector Maximilian I of Bavaria, after whom it is named today. Maximilian, sometimes also called "the great", was a powerful Catholic ruler during the Thirty Years' War and an important patron of the arts. It is enriched with impressive depictions of flowers and animals in astonishing naturalism, which adorn the pages next to the nine beautiful miniatures.
