Eva Fuková (1927–2015) is one of the most important figures in postwar Czech photography. Originally trained as a painter and graphic artist, she uniquely combined artistic thinking with photography, creating a distinctive visual language that moves between painting, poetry, and documentary. Her work is characterized by a sensitivity to light, structure, and composition, as well as a lyrical and experimental approach that transcends the conventions of her time. In 1967, she emigrated to the United States with her husband, painter and illustrator Vladimír Fuka, where she continued her work and became a respected figure in the Czech exile cultural scene. She passed away on November 25, 2015, at the age of 88.
This book was published in 2007 by Torst as part of the prestigious Fototorst edition, which showcases key figures of Czech photography in a compact, elegantly produced format. The publication has 125 pages, includes 80 reproduced photographs, and features a short biography of the artist as well as a list of illustrations. All texts are presented in Czech and English, making it a fully bilingual edition suitable for international readers and collectors.
The accompanying text is authored by Josef Moucha, a photographer, critic, and theorist, who places Eva Fuková’s work in the broader context of Czech and international photography of the second half of the 20th century. His text highlights not only the development of the artist’s work but also its lasting significance for contemporary understanding of artistic photography.
