Haori da uomo (giacca giapponese) - Seta - Giappone - Periodo Taishō (1912-1926)

Antique Men’s Haori – “Dragon and Biwa on Chikubu Island” A rare antique men’s haori, likely from the Taisho period (1912–1926). The lining features a magnificent hand-painted depiction of a dragon and a biwa (Japanese lute), skillfully rendered on fine silk. The composition contrasts the dynamic waves and roaring dragon with the serene beauty of the biwa, evoking the spirit of an ancient Japanese legend. The inscription “竹生島 (Chikubu-shima)” refers to the sacred island in Lake Biwa, associated with Benzaiten—the goddess of music and water. This symbolic combination of the dragon and biwa represents harmony between strength and art—an auspicious motif celebrating prosperity and creativity. Although the artist is unknown, the refined technique and silk craftsmanship indicate it was made by a highly skilled artisan of the early 20th century. Artist / Maker Profile Unknown artist (Japan, early 20th century) The detailed brushwork and balanced composition suggest the work of a master craftsman active during Japan’s Taisho era, a period known for blending traditional aesthetics with modern sensibility.
