Wyndham Payne was an illustrator who created a distinctive illustrated edition of Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows, first published in 1927. His illustrations are notable for their use of a specific yellow colour, described as canary yellow, and are found in hardcover editions from publishers like Methuen. The scarce copy was illustrated with frontispiece and 19 additional full-page plates in yellow and black by Wyndham Payne. Published by Methuen & Co Ltd, 36 Essex Street, London, 1927. Original blue cloth board stamped in gilt on front cover and the spine. Top page edges gilt. Book Dimensions: 20 x 14 cm and Number of Pages: 247 Condition External covers are worn at corners and edges, with some rubbings to head and foot of spine. Internally; in good condition. Interesting article with colourful pictures are taken from old newspaper, about the actual location of ‘Mr Toad’, are left within the book. Old inscription dated 1929 with neat ink on top first blank front free endpaper page. Pages clean with light spotting marks to the margin of some pages, Slight creases and tears to the margin of one plate, and also some closed tear to one page as you can see in the pictures. All plates are present and in nice condition (Please see pictures).
