Historical Note:
Vologases I came to the Parthian throne without internal opposition — a rarity among the Arsacid kings. His brothers confirmed his claim, and in return he granted them subordinate kingdoms, including Armenia to his brother Tiridates. This move provoked conflict with Rome, which considered Armenia within its sphere of influence. Emperor Nero dispatched the general Corbulo, who defeated Tiridates and installed a Roman client, Tigranes. When Tigranes invaded Parthian-controlled Adiabene, Vologases counterattacked and restored Parthian influence.
In AD 63, a compromise was reached: Tiridates would reign as king of Armenia but receive his crown from Nero in Rome. This agreement ushered in a rare period of stability and diplomatic balance between Parthia and Rome that lasted nearly half a century. Later in his reign, Vologases faced revolts by his son Vardanes II and the Indo-Parthian ruler Sanabares. He appears to have been deposed near the end of his life under uncertain circumstances.
