Absolute Auction – Calligraphy by Yamaoka Tesshu (1836–1888) – Late Edo to Early Meiji Period – Poem - 山岡鉄舟 Yamaoka Tesshu (1836–1888) - Giappone (Senza Prezzo di Riserva)

Item Description Absolute Auction – No Reserve. An exceptional Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku) featuring calligraphy by Yamaoka Tesshu (1836–1888) — the legendary samurai, Zen master, and calligrapher celebrated for his bold, spiritually charged brushwork. Dating from the late Edo to early Meiji period, this scroll embodies the fusion of Zen discipline and Bushido spirit that defined Tesshu’s life and art. The inscription reads: 鳥聲幽谷樹 山影夕陽村 (“The cry of birds echoes through the trees in a deep valley; the shadow of mountains falls upon a village at sunset.”) These are the third and fourth lines of the poem “Visiting Yuan Zhongshan’s Hermitage” (訪原仲山居) by the Song dynasty poet Liu Zihui (劉子翬). The verse captures the serene stillness of nature at dusk — a harmony between landscape, spirit, and contemplation — qualities deeply aligned with Zen philosophy. Yamaoka Tesshu’s brushwork is both vigorous and meditative: the ink flows with confidence, each stroke breathing rhythm and intent. The composition demonstrates Tesshu’s mastery of bokuseki (Zen calligraphy), where simplicity and spiritual awareness converge. Mounted on refined beige silk brocade, this scroll maintains a quiet dignity that complements its philosophical essence. The wooden roller ends complete its traditional balance. Details: Period: Late Edo to Early Meiji (ca. 1860s–1880s) Artist: Yamaoka Tesshu (1836–1888) Medium: Ink on paper (shihon bokusho) Inscription: Poem by Liu Zihui – Visiting Yuan Zhongshan’s Hermitage (lines 3–4) Dimensions: Total: 180 cm × 69 cm Artwork: 117 cm × 50.5 cm Mounting: Silk brocade (beige tone) Roller ends: Wood Condition: Good – light toning and creases from age, no tears or major damage. The ink remains deep and vibrant. Shipping: Tracked international shipping from Japan with careful art packaging. A rare and authentic example of Tesshu’s Zen calligraphy, conveying the strength, calm, and discipline of one of Japan’s greatest samurai-calligraphers. We use Japan post as a usual shipping method. Dear French buyers If you not receive the items within 2 weeks , please check the category "Recommended Letter (lettre recommandée) "with the tracking number our provided on the French Postal office online ("LaPoste.fr"). Dear Italian buyers If you are an individual, please tell me codice fiscale by message at the time of payment. (If you are a legal entity, partia IVA) Due to the recent tightening of Italian customs inspections, we cannot deliver the object to you without the above number. However, due to extremely high shipping volumes at this time, delivery may take over three months. Thank you for your understanding. Dear Valued Buyers in Europe, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to you. Thanks to your continued support, I have been able to carry on my business for more than ten years. As of June 28, 2025, new regulations have taken full effect in the European Union concerning the importation of cultural property from outside the EU. Under these rules, when items are classified as “Cultural Property” or as antiques over 100 years old, and they are not accompanied by an Export Permit for Cultural Property, certain restrictions may apply under both Italian law and EU regulations. This Export Permit for Cultural Property has traditionally been required when exporting items such as swords, and obtaining it generally takes about one month. For this reason, when shipping hanging scrolls that are more than 100 years old, I will continue to use the same HS code as for those less than 100 years old. I sincerely ask for your kind understanding regarding this matter. With gratitude and respect,
