Lagavulin 12-year Special Edition 2023 - "The Ink of Legends"
This limited edition of Lagavulin 12-year-old single malt whiskey comes from a distillery on the island of Islay and was released as part of the Diageo Special Releases 2023 series under the name "Spirited Xchange". After basic maturation in traditional oak barrels, the whiskey was finished in Don Julio Añejo tequila barrels, which gives it a unique herbal and smoky character inspired by the ancient art of tattoo from Mesoamerica. The year of bottling is 2023, with an alcohol strength of 56.4% ABV, without cold filtration and in the natural strength of the barrel. The nose is dominated by dense, aromatic herbal bubbles, the sweet smell of ripe plums, fresh notes of sea air, citrus and berries, with intense smoke and black ink symbolizing legends. On the palate, the whiskey is creamy and robustna, sweet with juicy plums, a hint of saltiness, herbs and growing smoke, ending with a long finish with smoke, sea salt, pepper and dried herbs. Ideal for collectors looking for innovative combinations of Islay's peat character with Mexican influences, this bottle pulsates with the intensity and pride of Lagavulin's over 200-year history.
Lagavulin 12-year Special Edition 2024 - "Fireside Tales"
Released as part of Diageo Special Releases 2024, this whiskey has aged in first-fill and refill bourbon barrels, which highlights the classic character of Lagavulin with a surprising sweetness under the influence of active oak. The year of bottling is 2024, with a strength of 57.4% ABV, in the cask strength version without chill filtration, inspired by stories by the campfire. Fresh, pure phenols resembling a smoldering bonfire on the beach are felt in the nose, with notes of thick toffee, vanilla, coconut and subtle spices. The palate is smooth, creamy and filling the mouth, initially very sweet with salt and controlled smoke, turning into an explosion of spices and citrus. The finish is long, intensely smoky and drying, with warm notes of spices that remain in the aftertaste, making it perfect for contemplating evening stories. This edition stands out for its mildness compared to typical peat Lagavulin, offering a rich palette for peated whiskey lovers with a touch of adventure.
These bottles, visible in the attached photos, represent prestigious, limited editions with unique packaging - black with a fire motif for 2024 and green with artistic tattoos for 2023 - which makes them attractive for collector's auctions. Both editions highlight the evolution of Lagavulin, combining the tradition of Islay with experimental maturations, and are valued for their high quality and rarity on the market.
