ONE OF THE EARLIEST VIEWS OF TRIPOLI. Bird's eye view of the town and harbor of the important former CRUSADERS' city Tripoli in Lebanon (formerly Syria) during the Ottoman period, as seen from the Mediterranean Sea.
Dated 1677 and based on the latest travelers' reports of 1668.
Nr. 5 at the top center of the etching indicates the CASTLE, (site of former Crusaders' CITADEL of RAYMOND DE SAINT GILLES - also known as Qala'at Sanjil and Qala'at Tarablus ), with the Mountains of Lebanon at the background (Nr.4 )
Size of whole sheet: 44.5 X 31 cm x 37cm. Original centerfold. Untrimmed original exceptionally large margins. General even light age-toning.
Very good and clear impression of the etching. Good strong paper quality.
