Meteorite Admire pallasite - Altezza: 53.8 mm - Larghezza: 45 mm - 24.7 g - (1)
In this lot I offer a slice of the Admir meteorite. One of the most beautiful pallasites, with translucent yellow-green olivines and a metallic nickel matrix! The olivines are angular unlike other pallasites which have rounded crystals.
The Admir pallasite formed at the boundary between the mantle and the core of an asteroid about 4.5 billion years ago. Deep inside the asteroid, molten metal from the outer core mixed with pieces of the olivine mantle, which crystallized. Things remained quiet for Admir until a large collision shattered the asteroid about 100 million years ago. This event and subsequent, less energetic collisions directed the pallasite material of Admir towards a collision with Earth.
Pallasites are one of the rarest types of iron-rich meteorites. The original Admir pallasite was discovered in 1881 on a farm in Lyon County, Kansas, when it was struck by a plow. More were found on the return trip with metal detectors.
At 11% nickel-iron, it is a typical main-group pallasite. Pallasites make up less than 0.2% of all known meteorites.
The extraterrestrial olivine can be seen when specimens are backlit. The olivine in pallasites is the same mineral as the gemstone peridot, but these peridots are special because they are not of Earthly origin.
The meteorite comes with a certificate of authenticity but without a stand.
