About Weingut Schloss Lieser: Weingut Schloss Lieser, located in the village of Lieser in the Mosel region, is a prestigious German wine estate renowned for its exceptional Rieslings. The estate spans 26 hectares (64 acres) of vineyards, exclusively planted with Riesling, including plots in several Grosses Gewächs and Erste Lage classified vineyards such as Lieser Niederberg Helden and Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr. The vineyards, situated on south- or southwest-facing slopes with slate soils, benefit from a unique mesoclimate and long growing season, producing fine and fruity Riesling wines. The slate soils absorb the sun's heat, while the Mosel river reflects the sun's rays, enhancing the ripening process. Schloss Lieser offers a range of wines from sweet to dry, including Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Auslese Goldkapsel, and the dry Grosses Gewächs and Erste Lage classified Rieslings. The grapes are hand-harvested and slowly fermented with natural yeasts at cool temperatures. Once the desired residual sugar level is achieved, the wines are decanted and separated from the yeast. History of the Vineyard: The story of Schloss Lieser began in 1884 when the castle was built by Eduard Puricelli, a successful entrepreneur. The estate served as the principal cellar and press house for Freiherr von Schorlemer’s prestigious vineyards from 1904. However, the estate fell into decline in the 1970s until it was revitalized by Thomas Haag in 1992. Under Haag's leadership, the estate expanded its holdings and restored its reputation as one of Germany's top Riesling producers. Legacy of the Winemaker: Thomas Haag hails from the esteemed Haag family, known for their contributions to the Mosel wine region. He took over Schloss Lieser in 1992, transforming it from a declining estate into a beacon of excellence. Under his leadership, the estate expanded its holdings to include several Grand Cru vineyards, such as Lieser Niederberg Helden, Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr, and Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Thomas Haag's meticulous approach to winemaking, focusing on purity and low manipulation techniques, has earned Schloss Lieser a reputation for producing some of the finest Rieslings in the world. Winemaker's Philosophy: Thomas Haag's philosophy centers on authenticity and naturalness. He aims to produce Riesling in its purest form, allowing the terroir to express itself fully in each bottle. Haag emphasizes minimal intervention in the winemaking process, ensuring that the unique characteristics of each vineyard are preserved. His commitment to quality is evident in every aspect of production, from hand-harvesting the grapes to slow fermentation with natural yeasts at cool temperatures. This approach results in wines that are elegant, precise, and reflective of their origin. Awards and Recognition: Falstaff: Winemaker of the Year (2021) Gault Millau: Winemaker of the Year (2015) Eichelmann Wine Guide: World-Class Winery with the highest possible ranking of 5 stars Feinschmecker: 5 FFFFF rating 2007 Vintage Quality: Legendary The 2007 vintage in Germany was exceptional. The growing season began with a warm spring, followed by a cool summer, and a late burst of heat in September and October, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and retain their acidity. The resulting wines were spectacular, with complex fruit flavors and refined aromatics. The Rieslings, in particular, were elegant and lush, and the sweeter styles are likely to cellar for some time more. Awards and Recognition: Wine Spectator: 95/100 points Prague WineTrophy Award: 99/100 points (2022) Final Note from OHMS: These three half bottles of liquid gold are a must-have for any well-informed sweet Mosel wine connoisseur. The signature and style of Thomas Haag are unbeatable. For more information about the Wine Trophy, visit Prague WineTrophy.
