This elegant and rare pair of ceramic vases is signed by the prominent Belgian ceramist, Antoine Dubois (1869–1949). Dubois was the founder and key artist of the famous La Céramique Montoise (Mons Pottery) studio, renowned for its Art Deco pieces.
Style and Decoration
The style of the vases reflects the transition between Dubois's late Art Nouveau and early Art Deco periods (estimated 1910s–1920s). The decoration features a stylised grape/berry and leaf motif typical of the Art Nouveau movement. This motif is expertly hand-painted in vivid enamel colours over a characteristic background of speckled and slightly iridescent glaze.
Material and Marks
The primary material is Faïence (Earthenware), commonly used by the Montoise studio. Both vases bear the hand-written "A. Dubois" signature, in addition to the pottery/model numbers (e.g., 6243 and MEX D.PLA) stamped on the base.
