Fenicio Steatite Amuleto di una divinità
A finely carved Phoenician black steatite amulet modelled in the shape of an anthropomorphic figure. It shows a stylistically rendered figure, dressed in a long robe and a tall, conical headpiece decorated with horizontal grooves. The figure seems to be holding its hand up to its mouth. The reverse is smooth. The piece is pierced transversally for suspension. Earthly encrustations to the surface.
Phoenicia was a civilisation originating from the Levant, the people of Phoenicia spoke a Semitic language and purposed jewellery, as in many ancient societies, to mark social status, wealth and privilege. Ornamental objects such as amulets were a favourite of the Phoenicians.
Measurements: Circa H 2.2cm x W 0.9cm
Provenance: From the collection of Mr S.M., London, UK, formed from 1969-1999.
