Jindřich Halabala – Secretary Cabinet, UP Závody, 1930s
An exceptionally rare catalogue piece designed by Jindřich Halabala and produced by UP Závody in the early 1930s, manufactured only to order — likely no more than a dozen examples were ever made. This secretary cabinet embodies the essence of Industrial Art Deco: the geometry of modernism softened by refined, curved edges and architectural proportions.
Crafted from solid walnut with richly figured mahogany and poplar burl veneers, the cabinet exhibits a masterful contrast between deep, linear vertical grains and the luminous, organic patterns of the burl surfaces. The upper section opens to reveal three interior drawers, side compartments, and a centrally placed lockable safe box, all preserved in factory-original condition — never restored.
Every component, including the rear panel, structure, and re-chromed hardware, remains authentic and complete, bearing the original UP Závody label. This piece exemplifies Halabala’s vision of precision-made luxury furniture: functional, sculptural, and timeless — a true icon of early Czechoslovak industrial design.
