【Product details】
This is an original woodblock print by Kasamatsu Shirō (笠松紫浪, 1898–1991), titled “Snow at Akamon” (雪の赤門), created in 1978. Unlike his earlier shin-hanga prints published by Watanabe, this work belongs to his later period, when he produced many prints as sōsaku-hanga (creative prints), meaning the artist himself both carved the blocks and printed the image.
The subject is the famous Akamon (Red Gate) of the University of Tokyo’s Hongo Campus, originally the Kaga Domain’s main gate. Kasamatsu depicts the gate under a quiet snowfall, with subtle gradations of white snow, footprints on the ground, and the soft texture of snow settling on roofs and branches. The work captures not only the architectural presence of the historic gate but also the serene beauty of winter in Tokyo.
The print bears Kasamatsu’s signature and seal in the lower left. Along the bottom margin, the title “雪の赤門” and the date 1978 are inscribed. In the right-hand margin there is a blindstamp reading “笠松紫浪・画・刻・摺” (Kasamatsu Shiro, drawn, carved, and printed), confirming the self-carved, self-printed nature of this work.
This woodblock print represents the mature period of Kasamatsu Shirō, who was one of the key figures of the shin-hanga movement and later transitioned to creating original prints by his own hand, leaving behind works of great refinement and individuality.
The condition of the image is very good, with fresh colors and fine impression. There are some minor smudges and a small spot in the white margin, and the print is backed. Please refer to the photographs for details of the condition.
Dimensions of Print: approx. H 41 cm W 28.2 cm
