On July 13, 1743, the VOC return ship Hollandia sank with all hands off the Isles of Scilly on her maiden voyage to Batavia.
On board were more than 35,000 silver coins, mostly Spanish reales, intended as trade currency for the East Indies. The wreck was rediscovered in 1971, and from the recovered treasure silver, this remarkable medal was struck.
The obverse features twin globes between pillars (referring to the famous Pillar Dollars) beneath a royal crown, with the legend:
“Hollandia • Foundered • Isles of Scilly 1743”
The reverse shows a stylized VOC sailing ship under full sail, surrounded by clouds, bearing the VOC monogram and the initials of the medallist (RD).
The piece is struck in sterling silver with official British hallmarks on the edge and contains silver that lay beneath the sea for nearly 230 years.
An exceptional collector’s item, with proven provenance and tied to a chapter of Dutch (VOC) maritime history.
