Historical context
The Great Crested Grebe is one of Europe’s most iconic waterbirds, celebrated for its elegant silhouette and spectacular courtship dance. In winter plumage, as seen here, the bird loses its ornamental head crests and adopts a calmer, more subdued palette—highly appreciated by collectors for its soft, natural appearance. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, grebes played an important role in natural-history collections across Europe, symbolising wetland ecology and early ornithological study.
