Una coppia di grandi vasi baluster cinesi 'Guerrieri' per lo Stretto, Nyonya, Peranakan. - Porcellana - Cina - Rama V (Chulalongkorn, จุฬาลงกรณ์) 1868 – 1910

A pair of big Chinese porcelain famille rose 'Warriors' baluster vases. China for South Asia (Thai / Singapore / Straits) market, 19th c., King Rama V (Chulalongkorn, จุฬาลงกรณ์, 1868 – 1910) period. Particularly rare! Painted to the exterior in typical Nyonya palette of colors with a large cartouche enclosing warriors on white ground, reserved on pink ground and lotus scrolls. The shoulder with four full relief Kuy-dragons on turquoise, pink and yellow diapper pattern ground. Neck with two reserves with warriors and handles modelled as Foo-dogs (temple lions), followed by a band of lotus scrolls under the top-rim. Interior of mouth with two flower sprays, top-rimslightly flared and gilt. Band of stylised lappets above the foot-rim. Straits Chinese Porcelain - intended for the Straits Chinese community in the former Straits Settlements of Penang, Malacca and Singapore. An older term is Nonya (Nyonya) ware, referring to porcelain used by married Chinese women of some standing, in Malaysia. Peranakan meaning 'local born', is a name for the descendants of the early Chinese immigrants in the Malacca straits area, and also for their unique culture. Chinese porcelain made for the Straits-Chinese has its own unique designs often similar to the textile patterns worn by the peranakan women, called nyonyas. Daylight pictures included. Dimensions: height - 29,1 / 29 cm; diameter – c. 10,5 cm. Weight - 1053 / 1034 g. Provenance: French private collection. Conditions report: very good condition for the age. One vase with a chip to the top-rim and small glaze-chip to one of dragons. Other vase in excellent condition, no damages. Minor firing faults. Check pictures for details. Worldwide delivery with online tracking.
