For sale is a museum-quality and highly characteristic oil painting by the prominent British animalier Thomas Sidney Cooper (1803–1902), Royal Academician.
Coming from a family inheritance, this work depicts a finely detailed flock of sheep resting on a clifftop overlooking the English coast (near Dover/Canterbury). The background opens up to monumental chalk cliffs and the sea beneath an atmospheric, subtly pink-toned cloudy sky. Cooper’s mastery in rendering animal fleece and natural light is evident in every brushstroke.
