Cizhou Ware Tricolor Carved Jar
Description:
This is a Cizhou ware tricolor carved jar from the Song-Jin period, a classic example of northern folk polychrome porcelain craftsmanship. It is simple, robust, and possesses a unique charm of its era. The shape is elegant and full, with a short neck, sloping shoulders, a rounded belly, and a tapering foot. The proportions are balanced and substantial, with smooth, flowing lines, showcasing the rustic charm of Song-Jin folk kiln wares.
The jar is made of red clay, employing the typical "carved and filled" technique of the Cizhou ware system. The neck is decorated with lotus petal patterns, and the main body features scrolling foliage patterns. The lines are free and unrestrained, the composition is well-balanced, and it exudes a strong folk flavor.
This piece can be traced back to the Song Dynasty (approximately 960-1279 AD) and was made by Chinese hands. The exposed clay at the base roughly indicates its material and production date.
Condition:
Very good condition. The lacquer has some wear and peeling, but there are no cracks or signs of repair. It produces a clear, crisp sound when tapped. It has been examined with strong UV light. (Please refer to the photos if the text is not clear enough.)
