Physionotrace technique was invented by Gilles-Louis Chretien in 1786. The artist traces the profile of the model looking through a mobile viewfinder connected with levers to a stylus that recorded all the movements in scale on a copper plate. Numerous copies could be obtained from the engraved plate.
