“The Decameron”, by Giovanni Boccaccio

A.H. Bulen, London - 1903, first edition - 2 volumes - 404 pp., 14 × 12 cm - Contains 12 erotic illustrations by Louis Chalon - In good condition; in the original cloth with gilt titles to the spines. Little bumping to the extremities, and some marking to the boards. The text block is untrimmed and a little spotted as a result. Otherwise clean and bright throughout, and firmly bound. The work is structured as frame story, which contains over 100 individual stories told by seven young women and three young men hiding from the black death in a villa outside of Florence.

These stories span the whole gamut of human experience, from the erotic to the tragic. They generally extol the so-called mercantile virtues of intelligence and quick wit. The work was enormously influential, and was used as a source of allusion or inspiration by writers from Chaucer to Edgar Allen Poe.

This edition is illustrated by the famous Louis Chalon. The illustrations are frequently erotic in nature, as befits many of the stories.
