Eleousa: “she who shows pity". The main feature of this composition is the tender relationship between mother and child.
Sitting on the left arm of the Mother of God the Christ Immanuel leans his cheek against that of his mother. He shrinks from the suffering that awaits him, he shrinks back in fear. The look of the mother of God is clearly saddened, but resigned: she knows that the suffering of her son is inevitable, and tenderly reaches her comforting hand. Because her son with took on the suffering of humanity with his death on the cross, it in this way she is the loving comforting person for all people in need.
Reproduction of the Byzantine masterpiece, by the famous painter Theophanes the Greek, late 14th century.

The second icon shows the glorified Christ: the King of it all, enthroned in heaven. The throne is not visible however; pictured is Christ, who has returned as judge King for the last judgement.
