¶ This is a collection of the Arabian Nights tales, or One Thousand and One Nights. The stories originate from the Middle East and South Asia. They were originally compiled in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age. The first English Language edition was published in 1706.
Lang was inspired to edit this edition of The Arabian Nights following the popularity of his own Fairy Stories. He also recounts in the preface that he remembers reading The Arabian Nights as a child in 'dirty old yellow volumes of small type with no pictures' which is why this edition is full of illustrations by Mr Ford.
