Boston: Benjamin B. Mussey, Philadelphia: Thomas Cowperthwait & Co., New York: Collins, Keese &.

Complete and in fine condition. 4to (23 by 27cm) pp. viii, [9]-119. 64 engraved plates all full sized. No foxing, tears etc, (four boo boos but more on that later). Bound in period full calf and a nicely done rebacked spine, An important work in the popularization of the Greek Revival in America. As an architect, Benjamin is credited with the design of the Carew House, Springfield, the Hollister House, Greenfield, the West Church, Boston, Blah Blah Blah. Why this book was addressed to “Practical House Carpenters” is beyond me, The proffered designs are well beyond the skill set of any carpenter I knew—who by and large were more interested in Beers and Dados (are you calling me a queer?). Five of the 64 drawings show signs of blood splatters most likely caused by the misapplication of power tools and the overuse of aforementioned beer.
