Damask linen is a high quality textured fabric that comes in monochrome or multicolour.
Its Italian name (Fiandre) comes from the Flanders region where it was historically produced with damask linen. The complex processing, together with the high quality material, made it a luxury product exported throughout Europe. The industrial production with Jacquard looms, which reduced the costs, made it accessible and popular in every home.
It features glossy-opaque woven decorations, obtained with various weaves on a shiny background, usually made of satin weave. The patterns are either geometric or stylized. The yarn is very fine, smooth and glossy to the touch, with a very dense weave, and contributes to form a fine, delicate, and yet compact and resistant fabric.
It was formerly made of linen, today it is made of mercerised cotton or synthetic fibres for less valuable products. Originally white, it is also produced in pastel colours and, more rarely, in brilliant colours in order to fit fashion needs.
It is the ultimate fabric used for the manufacture of elegant tablecloths. Nowadays, it can also be a stain-resistant product due to a silicone finishing, a treatment that prevents the liquids from penetrating the fibres. This, however, also stiffens the tablecloth and gives it a plastic-coated appearance.
