Large Dogon medicine cabinet (Mali)
Second half of the 20th century - In good condition

Carved in only one piece of wood. 2 figurines are carved on both doors. 4 ancestor’s heads at the top, looking in all 4 directions (a protection against witchcraft). 4 couples are carved on the sides, evoking the 4 ancestors couples who created the 4 Dogon lineages. A crocodile and a snake are carved on the back (alluding to the Lebe snake, which guided the Dogon people from the Mandé towards the cliff of Bandiagara, where they are now settled).
Height: 60 cm; Outer width: 14 cm; Outer depth: 10 cm; Weight: 2, 213 kg.
