May Claerhout was born on 21/2/1939 in Pittem. She made statues in terracotta, bronze and porcelain. Her work is often quite suggestive and story-telling. Often with grotesque figures, sometimes described as being folkish, even though she excellend in 'serious' work.
The importance of her work can hardly be overestimated. May Claerhout is known both at home and abroad. An official statue of Europa is placed next to the European parliament and a statue of Father Damien can be found next to the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
In her youngest years she made statues in porcelain. She was the only person in the world who succeeded in this. She gained enormous respect for this in the European parliament.
Claerhout passed away in 2016.
