Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990) was one of the greatest Dutch photographers and documentary filmmakers of the 20th century. He was a unique figure. As a street photographer he went to cities like Paris, Amsterdam, Hong Kong and Tokyo searching for self-conscious people, pretty girls and defiant youths. Van der Elsken’s photos and films are strong in form, undeniably rooted in their time, but at the same time always timeless. Ed van der Elsken knew how to document the ‘Zeitgeist’ and influence it. He developed a direct, unconventional and personal style in his work. Van der Elsken’s presence is always visible in his work, contact was essential for him to create an image. He also often staged a situation being the playful dynamic art director that he was.
