The book is the result of the exhibition created in 2008 by the meeting of three museums, including the one of the quai Branly, to trace the influence of jazz music on the other arts in the twentieth century. Since 1848 (first record of a proto-jazz music) to free jazz, 1960s and these latest impact, we follow the main creators of the jazz and the effects that they have produced on the creations of writers, other musicians, photographers, filmmakers, cartoonists, designers, painters etc., in the United States and Europe. A succession of articles scholarly but readable, interspersed with many illustrations pace the presentation of the successive artistic movements. Emphasis is placed, for the one-hundred - twenty years of jazz, on the issue of race and one remembers how the situation done to blacks in the USA even after the end of slavery was terrible. But inside, it's the question of the mixture, miscegenation, meetings and human convergences which is central in this book as in the exhibition it accompanies.
