A fine ivory netsuke of a couple, signed TomoChika - Japan - 19th century
Very good condition

A very well carved and engraved netsuke 4,7 cm high and 4 cm wide of a man and a woman. The woman embrasing the man while looking how he is taking something out of a bowl (eating?).

Signed by TomoChika, a carver working in the 19th century, recorded in the Ko-Ji-Hô-Ten (sign. 183), an important book published in 1923 describing amongst others the netsuke carvers known at that time (see picture of the article).

Not the normal himotoshi but the himo who passed under the arm of the female. Some small age cracks but no further damadge.

An expert report is added to confirm the age an the fact it can be sold under CITES Rules. Bidders outside the EU should check own laws on import of antique ivory.
