Very known, especially for their famous dark patina, Yaure masks symbolise the Yu (spiritual power) and are most of the time topped by a totem animal or by a sort of comb; the border of the masks is often ornamented with a crenellated pattern.

Yaure masks are usually worn on two occasions, the ye and the lo. The celebration of the ye has as aim the purification of the village after one’s death and helps to soul of the deceased to reach eternal rest; they are painted on this occasion. ON the occasion of the ceremonies of the yo, we can see masks appear covered with black pigments. In practice, all sorts of masks are interchangeably used in different ceremonies.

These masks are renowned because they are very “powerful” and are even so “dangerous” that women of the village, even post-menopausal, are not allowed to see them, they only appear at night.
