The Kanaga mask is the most famous Dogon mask. It represents a bird. The triangular shape of the face symbolises the jaws and the lower conical form, the tongue. The mask is raised with a wooden assembling (planks) in the form of a cross, which are bound to each other with leather, it refers to Creation and represents the spread wings of the Komondo, a mythical bird, but it also symbolises the legs of a crocodile. The top part of the cross illustrates the supernatural world, whereas the lower part symbolises the terrestrial world. The line between the two parts is the union of both worlds.
