Xavier Viñolas y Pujol (Bonmarti,1915 -Olot, 2002) was a vocational painter who never stopped painting. He studied in Olot’s School of Fine Arts under the guidance of Lu Pascual and Melchor Domengue, and later in the Superior School of landscape, with masters such as Xavier Nogués, Pedro Créixams and Francesc Labarta, among others. he combined his studies with his work in the workshop of saint figures “El Arte Cristiano”. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he was sent to the front and then he had to do his military service in Melilla. From 1942, he returned to the civilian life and that same year he held his first individual exhibition in Sala Armengol in Olot. From that precise moment onwards, his works could be continuously be seen in Olot as well as in another cities such as Barcelona.Granollers or Figueres.
In 1968 Xavier Viñolas entered as a teacher in Olot’s School of Fine Arts, when Pedro Gussinyé retired. He combined teaching with his pictorial activity until 1987, when he retired and started to dedicate himself exclusively to painting.
The exhibition “Xavier Viñolas. Paisaje, Luz y Movimiento” (Sala Abierta 2) commemorates the centenary of his birth with a collection of works from all the periods of this artist. This exhibition is a sample of his sincere painting, saturated by light and of his joyful, festive landscapes in which the human figure is nearly ubiquitous and he portrays the life and scenes of the moment. Olot’s landscapes are the main source of inspiration for Xavier Viñolas. However, he was interested in very different subjects. The Garrotxa is certainly the most common, as well as the Fageda d’en Jordà, the Santa Pau road, the plan de Bas or the city of Olot, seen as his main pictorial subjects.
