Frans Laurent Wilhelmina Adolf Lodewijk Masereel (Blankenberge, 31 July 1889 - Avignon, 3 January 1972) was a Flemish graphic artist, woodcutter, painter and draughtsman. He is considered as the most important wood engraver and graphic artist of the 20th century.
A large woodcut by graphic artist Frans Masereel (1889-1972)
Master of expressionism, internationally known for his social-critical work.
His initials FM and date 1955 are located in the plate edge.
Also signed, titled and dated in pencil by the artist at the bottom of the print.
The work is 100% in its original, unopened frame! The linen mat is still completely intact and original.
Notice the label on the back by the Belgian framer 'FRAME' in Gentbrugge.
Important note: The paper on which has been printed is NOT brown or white but has a light/dark variegated drawing (see photos). Never before I saw similar printing paper used by Frans Masereel. Possibly a Special Edition? A try out?
