Mother and child, from the Fon, Boccio, Benin.

Collected between 1970 and 1980, private Belgian collection.

Wood, cowrie eye, textile ( red, white, black), beads, offering remains

Mother and child power figure (bocio). The child figures is on the back. carved and bound together with red, white, black textiles, beads, attached encrusted heavily with undetermined substance, perhaps blood. Necklaced with cowrie shells and beads.

Bochio are very powerful and very personal objects. An individual may make one for protection, to harm an enemy, or to ensure personal success. The bochio is made in secret, so that only the owner knows its composition and purpose. Some materials, however, have consistent functions. The bochio is put in the ground in front of a shrine or in some other spiritually significant location. Bocio operate at the crossroads between the spiritual and the human realms.
