Original woodblock print by Okada (1869 - 1939), ca. 1923 From the Shin-Hanga series "The Complete Works of Chikamatsu Monzaemon", first edition. Carving by Yamagishi Kazue, printing by Nishimura Kumakichi.
This is a touching portrait of the young and beautiful Osan from the kabuki theatre play "Daikyoji Mukashi-goyomi". Osan got himself into trouble unintentionally; here she looks with an expression of innocence and despair aside.
The work is made in black and soft grey tones. Fine Bokashi shading and a tender lining in the face and the hair. There is a blind press in the white dots of her kimono and hairline.
Dimensions, including edge: 45 x 28 cm
Condition: very beautiful colours and details. A bit of discolouration, some small stains. Please see photos for the details.
